While it is certainly to enjoy a few of the caves at Carlsbad Caverns on your own, you will really see some amazing sights if you choose to follow one of the Ranger-guided tours. Carlsbad Caverns National Park in Carlsbad, NM has over one hundred caves and caverns, and guided tours are the best way to see the caves that might be too dangerous to explore on your own. Just remember that children under the age of three are not allowed in any of the guided tour caverns, so you will want to plan around that before you purchase your tickets.
The Spider Cave is probably the most popular of the caverns for children. This is the best place for children and able-bodied adults to get down and crawl around on the cavern floors. There are dozens of little passageways, with lowered ceilings or a tight squeeze through narrow walls. Visitors to the Spider Cave always feel as though they are discovering the caves for the very first time. Some of the highlights of this guided tour include the Medusa Room, the Mace Room, and Cactus Spring. Just remember that you are likely to get dirty, so don’t wear your favorite clothes when planning to tour the Spider Cave. Jeans, boots or sneakers, and comfortable shirts are probably the best clothing. Shorts are not recommended, even in the hot summer months, because you will be crawling and you will want to protect your legs as much as possible.
The Left Hand Tunnel is also a very unique Carlsbad Caverns experience. The entire tour is guided by lanterns, which means that you will be able to see the beautiful rock formations without the harsh lighting that might be present in other caverns. Your Ranger guide will show you amazing cave pools and explain the Permian-age fossils that you will see. This is a fairly easy tour, but you should be prepared with boots or sneakers. Some of the slopes can be pretty slippery, and there are uneven trails all through the caves. Be careful as you place your feet, because it’s not that hard to slip into one of the cave pools or damage one of the fragile cave formations.
There are fees for each of these tours, but keep in mind that your admission prices help to keep the caverns open and safe for all visitors.
