Going abroad for a holiday can be a great way to experience a different culture, make memories and see the world. Whilst planning where you’re going, who you’re going with and what you’ll do while you’re there can all be part of the fun, it’s important to consider certain issues such as insurance, vaccines and your personal safety.

Choosing your destination is the ideal starting point to a special holiday abroad. Whilst making sure your destination of choice suits your holiday needs be it a beach trip, sight seeing tour or city break, you should also make sure that the country you’re visiting is safe. Unfortunately many destinations across the globe aren’t strangers to civil war, political unrest or health epidemics. Unless you have a specific reason – outwith going for a vacation – you should not visit a country at risk. Contacting your country’s consulate will allow you to obtain an up to date list of countries citizens aren’t advised to visit.

Once you’ve chosen a safe destination to visit you should also invest a bit of time investigating what vaccines and health precautions you need to take. Visiting the World Health Organisation website will allow you to determine what vaccines are recommended for each country. While the Western world boasts a thorough vaccination programme, areas of Africa and the East are still plagued by diseases such as Typhoid, Cholera and Measles. Since no vaccine provides 100% protection, it is also advised that travellers exercise a level of caution around wild and domestic animals, drink bottled water and prepare their own food where possible.

Finally, once you’ve decided on a safe location and contacted your doctor to discuss vaccines you may also want to consider insurance. Travel insurance can provide a welcome safety net when it comes to canceled flights, lost baggage or hotel problems. Travel insurance not only provides peace of mind but also alternatives should you find yourself left in the lurch in a foreign country. Health and life insurance should also be considered to ensure you are guaranteed medical care in a worst case scenario. Making decisions about your well being before going abroad is vital to ensure an enjoyable and relatively care free vacation.
