Medical Tourism in Mexico continues to grow

Americans have been purchasing medicines in Mexico for some time and there are 345 pharmacies around the Tijuana border alone. But the real increase in medical tourism in Mexico involves major procedures.

Last year the Institute of the Americas hosted a conference in La Jolla, close to San Diego, about medical tourism in Mexico. Speakers noted that a procedure such as angioplasty, costing up to $80,000 in the US, would usually cost just one tenth of that in Mexico. American patients want to keep their health care costs down by having treatments at a reduced rate, especially as the number one reason for bankruptcy in the US is medical bills.

In 2009 952,000 people traveled to Mexico for medical treatment and approximately 50% of those were from America. There are also 1 million American retired people living in Mexico, all receiving regular medical care from Mexican doctors.

Therefore several privately owned medical facilities are being built in Mexico to meet the demand of American patients. As well as substantial cost savings, there are often new treatments performed in Mexican hospitals that are not yet available in the US.
